1959 Citroen Squal

Created by French engineer Guy Mismaque, the Squal was an audacious late-1950s vision of a lightweight, economical sports car. Drawing inspiration from Alfa Romeo’s legendary BAT studies, Mismaque developed a dramatically low and aerodynamic design around Citroën 2CV mechanicals, a tubular chassis, and lightweight fiberglass coachwork. At approximately 350 kg, the tiny Squal was capable of nearly 120 km/h.

This car is the very first Squal and was completed in 1959 and displayed at the 1960 Paris Motor Show. Of the nine chassis reportedly completed, only a handful of cars were assembled, making the surviving examples exceptionally rare.
