1970 Chevrolet Chevelle

Using a stock 1970 big block Chevelle off the showroom floor, noted racer and painter Emory Nickels created one of the most feared dirt/asphalt race cars in the early 1970’s. Driven to multiple feature wins by the likes of Larry Moore and Chuck McWilliams, this Chevelle was a menace in the OH/KY/IN area. Notable modifications to this car include an adjustable Frankland quick change rearend, rear spoiler, custom exhaust, Monte Carlo front end, and much more. During the 1972 Dri-Powr 400, Larry Moore was a lap up on the entire field when he was involved in a wreck. The repairs in the pits put Larry multiple laps down. Once back on the dirt, Larry had the run of a lifetime, lapping the field numerous times climbing all the way back up to 6th position. After the race, winner Dave Sorg joked that there were three #17’s out on the track! After the Chevelle was done racing in the mid 1970’s, it was put out to pasture in an Ohio tow yard, rusting away winter after winter. In the early 2000’s, the car was completely restored to its former glory by Emory and other members of the original race team. Its debut was at Florence Speedway for the North/South 100 where Larry Moore hot lapped to cheers from the crowd.
