1967 BMW 1602 / Son of Cobra 004

The “Chamonix Commission” is a bespoke 1967 BMW 1602 created by California-based builder Son of Cobra, founded by Paul Lefevre. Drawing from both vintage motorsport and Lefevre’s background as a surfboard shaper, the car reflects an approach centered on lightweight construction, flowing form, and handcrafted detail. Completed in April 2026, it is a comprehensive reimagining of BMW’s iconic Neue Klasse coupe.

The body has been extensively recreated in carbon fiber and finished in custom Chamonix white with a Sahara beige nose inspired by period Alpina racing cars. Power comes from a rebuilt BMW S14 engine from the legendary E30 M3, paired with a restored 5-speed gearbox, custom suspension, AP Racing brakes, and bespoke forged wheels. Producing approximately 237 horsepower while weighing just 1,862 pounds, the car delivers a highly engaging and lightweight driving experience.

Inside, the cabin blends classic motorsport character with modern craftsmanship through the use of Porsche fabrics, a carbon fiber dashboard, customized bucket seats, and numerous handmade details throughout. The result is a highly personalized interpretation of the iconic BMW 2002 that is equal parts vintage race car, modern performance machine, and functional design object.
